because they've only mapped some places in high resolution, and not others. If you imagine that there has to be a satellite above earth, that takes these pictures of the earth one at a time. Plus they can only do it on clear days.
If you have a look at an airport, you can sometimes see the same plane on the runway, and then taking off. This is because in the time that the satellite had taken the first picture, the plane had moved down the runway and into the second picture. Now imagine that the satellite has to do the who world in this way...it's going to take a long time!
I can see my house though, and I live in Yorkshire!

I think the Government regulates certain areas that are not allowed to be photographed above a certain resolution. I know there is a big spot like that near the D.C. area that is blurred out, probably to cover up some Government building. I was once using a different satellite imaging website (I forget what it was called) and they had the Capital building all blurred out.
Just another Government rule and regulation.

Because they don't do high resolution photos of EVERY space, only the most familiar. Like NYC would be very easy to see up close, but the place that we stayed in Maine didn't have clear resolution because it wasn't a more famous/familiar place.
Check out the pyramids in Egypt on Google Earth. They are so cool!

It has to do with the resolution of the satellite photos. Generally speaking the newer the photo, and the denser the population(more demand for photos for denser populated areas, i.e. more revenue generated) the higher resolution the photo. Some areas are blacked out at the request of the government.

Google Earth is a compilation of satellite photos. Some are clearer than others. I've noticed that they seem to take more distinct photos of larger cities than of rural areas.

My guess: for security reasons. I read a few months ago that the VP mansion and Cheney's Wyoming place where blanked out or fuzzy.
