Chords are one thing and music is another. It took me a long time to memorize songs and the chords that go along with them. Don't learn songs you don't like. You won't stick with it. You can learn chord progressions through music theory, but you experience the music by learning and playing the music. Strumming and picking patterns may add to the song than just playing the chord. You don't have to hit all the strings... sometimes less is more.

Be patient, don't give up. When I first started playing, changing chords was like a centipede with a wooden leg. nine hundred ninety nine clump.. It wasn't smooth. But it got that way through practice. Spend some time practicing in the dark. Look at the fret board all you want but you will not see anything. You really get to know it.

There are loads of sites on the computer to look up basic guitar chords. There are also tons of basic guitar books at any music store to "self-teach".

Basic chords are pretty easy. Once you get them you just move on to the majors and minors.

Enjoy!!!
