I have a fujitsu siemens amilo 1405b it is 18ish months old. I was originally trying to format it because the harddrive had accumilated alot of junk over the months and was rather slow but when I put the recovery disk in the drive and restarted it, it would load up normally I'd ask it to boot from the cd then a blue screen would appear as normal loading some components then randomly it will just turn its self off. I'd try again but to no avail it just doesnt work. I even purchased a new hard drive and tried a fresh install of xp but still it wouldnt work...........help!!!

I dont want to take it to a specialist unless i have no choice its a last resort because its happened before but all they did was replace the harddrive and reinstall xp which couldnt of fixed the problem although it did work there must still be errors. The thing is i tried puttting a new harddrive in knowing thats all they did and it still keeps switching off

That's a difficult question, because when your computer randomly turns off it can mean a lot of things.
It's possible it's a problem with the memory, motherboard or CPU. There is also a possibility that it's some card that you are using. I had a problem with a driver for my network card that kept locking up and rebooting my computer.
You can take it to a computer repair place, where they can test some of the components. You could also try swapping out components until you figure out which one is bad.

Is the laptop overheating? Make sure you have it set on a flat surface such as a desk or table. Check intake and exhaust vents for buildup in dust or lint.
I've known many laptops that would just turn off if they got warm. It's possible that over time dust and dirt have collected inside the case preventing adequate air flow for cooling.

My OH is a techy and he charges £15 for an initial assessment and often will tell the user how to do the repair themself.
It sounds like a settings problem to me though.

I had a problem very similar to this and it turned out that one of my memory sticks had gone bad. I agree with the specialist recommendation -- they may not be as expensive as you think, and they will give you the right answer!

Take it to your local Techie. I did and it only cost me $65 to reformat mine and it is still running for the woman I sold it to and it is over 3 years old.
