If the world just cut off all trade with Iran and the terrorist nations all the money they use for terror wold just dry up in short order. I mean ALL trade no relief, money, goods, no oil is bought, they really get nothing ! NO trade of any kind what so ever till they renounce terror permanently. If they renege just leave them in limbo for 50 or 100 years! NO nation can survive as an island. Do the nations that break the on trade senario the same treatment! Arabs only supply 30% of the worlds oil, surely we can cut that much! With any real concerted effort we could. Not every Arab nation will be in violation! So the decrease will not be that severe, 15-20% tops!

This is a very complex matter, with many, many facets. My on theories are that

1. we need their oil. This is being realistic. People like to make this a big anti-war issue, but the fact is that America needs TONS of oil every single day, and it's not like we're being frugal about it, either.

2. Mass sanctions is a direct attack against terrorist nations, which affect millions of people. How many of those millions are terrorists? How much do you want to bet that the majority of people in a "terrorist" nation are just regular joes just trying to survive under a backwards government/infrastructure? What do we accomplish by hurting THEM? We'll only incense them and turn some of them into terrorists. Imagine: If someone cut of trade w/ America until we got rid of our religious extremists, e.g. Fred Phelps, would you like it? You're innocent of his extremism, yet you have to suffer. Wouldn't that piss you off and make you want to lash out against your offender?

Really, exterminating existing terrorists is important, and God bless the militaries that defend us every day by rooting out evil, but the only long-term solution is make the ignorant potential terrorists see that violence is not a solution to their country's problems, and that Islamic fanatics do not provide an answer..

Sigh... Trade Embargoes only work if EVERYONE participates. So what is the US blocks trade with Iran... Russia, China, Syria, France, Germany (oh god... the list goes ON and ON) STILL deal with them.

... and, oh yeah... then your Gas prices go even FURTHER through the roof.

People panicked when a small Oil Line in Alaska sprung a leak... wanna stop trading with one of the largest Oil Exporters around... THEN see what happens to your economy.

Okay... so you want to cut 30% consumption? 1/3, huh? Consider the taxes that this generates, the people who are employed by the petroleum industry who would be let go. The Truckers who would have to pay a premium on their fuel... which translates into an increase in the cost of EVERY PRODUCT YOU PURCHASE.

Then... we talk about how the REST of the Middle East will suffer. Back a wild animal into a corner, see how they react. Wanna see unrest in the Middle East? Start cutting off the arms and legs of a country with a large weapons stockpile... you think Iraq is bad???

Man... I could go on for hours on how flawed your plan is.

Diplomacy DOES work... As do Electric cars. Practice one, buy the other. When people do this, the world WILL be a better place.

And how many countries were doing business with old Saddam back when the UN had issued multiple trade embargos and sanctions against Iraq prior to the American action? The simple fact is that someone, and probably a LOT of someones would continue to do business on the sly because they can and because they can get premium prices from the "embargoed" nation. I also seem to recall other "embargoes" that were thwarted, sometimes even by those who voted for them, in my world history classes decades ago, but I'm too lazy to look them up now.

If you want a more "practical" answer, even if America dropped all of it's legal and environmental restrictions on drilling and building refineries, it would take at least 10 years according to what I've heard on the radio to ramp up production of Oil to anything near what we get from even one Middle Eastern country. As to the reserves and laws restricting oil exploitation in other countries (Russia comes to mind) I wouldn't even begin to guess at how long it would take.

While I don't believe the simplistic view that we (America) "go to war for oil", we HAVE avoided war for it and made unbalanced concessions for it in the past.

What nuclear bomb application? Iran does not have a nuclear weapons application. How could China have helped them in a application that doesn't exist? it relatively is been shown by utilising the IAEA as "untruthful". That's right, cut all relations with them, and then find out how fast our standard of living will suffer. It's amazing how much everything in america depends on continuous and cheap supplies of oil. Look around you, from the keyboard that you type on, to the screen you look at, or the clothes you wear, a lot of the materials come from oil products. Of course, our economy would collapse too, for lack of energy to drive the generators, cars, trucks, trains, planes, computers, heaters, coolers, air conditioning units.... the list goes on and on....

I would LOVE that see the happy delusional statistic that supports that thirty percent crap. They supply more than half the world's oil and even more in natural gas. Our wonderful existence in modern society is supplied by oil, ANY lapse and bam! Right back in the dark ages for us. We have no backup plan, no alternitive energy. Its going to be VERY hard if we lose oil, watch that trade embargo shatter after a month.

Oh my god think about what you are saying...Iran as a country is not terrorist, you are generalizing. A small number of peopel in Iran are terrorists. Why should we punish the thousands of decent honest Iranians who do nothing wrong to punish the few indivuals who do commit acts of terrorism. As for the money, in most cases the governments are not funding the terrorists. This is a bad idea and that is why it has or never will happen...

Are you kidding, have you seen how much people have complained about gas prices jumping to $3 per gallon? Now picture oil running out completely. Prices at $10 a gallon. Economy grinding to a halt, people losing their jobs, their houses. China will never agree to do that, neither will india. Russia has its own oil reserves.

So the US and whoever is with them will burn their economies while our rivals grow in influence. Bad decision.

where will we get our oil from? i don't think you've thought this through. we use the bulk of the world's oil so it may not mean much that the arabs only supply 30% to the world. we would have to cut our consumption more than that.

i answered what you asked. frankly, i don't know how you compare iran to the colonies at all, but beyond that, our morals clearly do not dictate our foreign policy. if we were to refuse to trade with all the nations who have policies we are unhappy with, the united states would not exist as you see it today.

on top of that, it would make us collossal hypocrites to insist that they control their people 100% when we send our children to fight for israel. they aren't as stupid as you make them out to be, and you show a complete ignorance of history and reality with this plan you articulate.

"On one hand, I feel total pride, since I spent my whole life raising our kids to be Zionists," Marla Comet-Stark, who lives in Ohio and whose son is now in basic training in Givati, told Haaretz. "But, on the other hand, I feel like saying 'just kidding, I didn't really mean the whole Zionism thing - there are other ways to help Israel.'"

in two words,
diplomatic relations.
and,
also.
what about the citizens of the country that don't support the terrorists?
are we going to hang them out to dry too?
and the nations that broke the agreement,
they could just band together,
and make the terrorists bond even stronger.
