My best friend has stolen money from me. I caught and confronted her, and she's now saying she has a problem and needs help. So do I help her? Or turn my back because she stole the only money I had??

If she is serious about getting help then help her. Make two things clear, 1) she gives you the money back and 2) if she steals from you or anyone else again you will lose all respect for her and drop her as a friend.

If she's stealing because she is poor and needs clothes or something to eat (I doubt it) that's one thing. If she's stealing because she thinks it's fun then that's a totally different problem.

When I was a teenager I stole things mainly to get attention and fit in. When I got busted I realized what I was doing was wrong. I say give her a second chance but two strikes you're out.

Tell her to think about what she did and how it was wrong. Don't talk to her for a day, week whatever, then ask her if your friendship was worth the money she stole. Suggest a way of her paying you back that will make her feel remorse (cleaning your house, getting a crappy job to pay you back, holding a sign on a streetcorner that says "I have to beg for money to payback my best friend the money I stole from her. Then I have to beg for her forgiveness). She is your best friend, you don't want to lose her but getting walked on REALLY sucks.

Hell no, Call the cops and have her arrested. I hate a thief! She is the lowest of the low. A guy stole from me the other day; a dollar i had left out [as a test]. He is rank and I won't have anything more to do with him. If he took a dollar what else would he take?
Use your common sense, why would you want to be a victim?

Not unless she pays you back? Can you trust her even if she pays you back? If she doesn't steal from you anymore, then who will be her next victim? Would you still be comfortable hanging around a thief? What if you are with her when she steals something? You would be an accompliss. You better check your bags to be sure she hasn't stolen you integrity.

Yes, help her by giving her the phone number to a mental health clinic and then, stay clear of her theiving butt! She's just using that as an excuse. You should get some new friends without light fingers. She doesn't respect you or your friendship, honey. Drop her like dead weight!

Wow. She really breached your trust. It will be difficult to do this, but give her another chance. If she steals from you or any one else again (including shoplifting), then it would be best to keep your distance. Friendly, but distant. Don't get involved with people who make a habit of stealing or else some day you'll end up in trouble. too.

You cannot help her so don't listen to all those people telling you that you can. The only thing you will do is Enable her to continue. She needs professional help and only she can seek that out. You can be her friend but I would set the limits on that.
