Rush, Dream Theater, Yes, The Flower Kings, Genesis w/ Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Frank Zappa, etc, etc, etc.....
Basically, any music that leans toward the more progressive elements of musicianship, are disliked by the masses for the simple fact that most people don't have the capacity to understand just how talented those musicians truly are.

John Frusciante
He's the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and he has alot of solo work that is amazing. He was also # 18 on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists of All Time.

U2, i know a lot of people like them but I know a lot of people also hate them and i don't understand why.
People from bands I like that did some solo stuff like, Michael Hutchence of INXS, John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats, all really good bands and their solo stuff is really good too.
Arctic Monkeys, they are huge in the UK but I've noticed here in America a lot of people think they suck!?!??!
