Cairo isn't a gentle city. Home to more than 16 million Egyptians, Arabs, Africans and sundry others, the 'Mother of the World' is an all-out assault on the senses. Chaotic, noisy, polluted, totally unpredictable and seething with people, the sheer intensity of the city will either seduce or appal.

Cairo doesn't have the resources for graceful boulevards and cobbled squares and the kind of dolled-up, prettified buildings that cry out to be photographed and stuck in an album. Historic buildings are buried in age-old quarters of the city that have yet to be tamed and made tourist-friendly.

Hey,
Ok...coming from someone that moved here a few years ago...here's some random advice.
* Cars will not stop for you to pass when you cross the street--so prepare to run.
* You tend to get a lot of verbal harassment over here, regardless of what you're wearing, but it's aways best to ignore.
* When taking a cab-- always make sure you've got change, give the drive a big bill and expect very little back. (Unless you're taking a yellow cab, they've got set rates)
* Shorts and tank tops aren't really acceptable here-- neither is hugging/kissing someone of the opposite sex in public.
In terms of places to go and things to do...
Maadi and Zamalek are the most forienger friendly places you could go.
Citystars provides the best shopping.
Mohandiseen has got some great restaurants.
You should definitely try the "fallouka"s...(tiny boats on the Nile) in the evening-- very beautiful.
Also go horseback riding at the Pyramids.

And as someone else mentioned, DEFINITELY check out Sharm el Sheikh, that place it amazing.

It takes a while to adjust, but know your way around and I'm sure you'll have a blast.

I lived in Cairo, for 7yrs, in 80s/90s. A lot has changed today, but if you are a Lady, remember when down town Cairo, make sure your legs and arms are covered, If you like horse back riding round the area of the Pyramids, you can rent a horse, and ride all over the sand dunes. I bought my horse from the stables there. The food is very much like you get in England, the people are very friendly. if you try to learn their language. The Museum is a great place to go, its amazing, also the Souk in down Town Cairo. For children there are good schools, and plenty ex pats to make friends with. If you party be careful, drinking and driving. Remember its a Islam country and respect there ways. Beware of gold shopping with traders at the door. Always go to a recommended Jeweller. Such as Ali Eve in Maddi. Tell him a lady who was a good customer said to go to him. Restaurants are great, Do not drink the water,do not take ice in your drink unless you make it from bottled water yourself.Once you have got used to Egypt you will be able to drink tap water, but you do stand the chance of getting a nasty bug. There is plenty to do for adults and children, and I wish I could live there permanently. Good luck, and just go with the tide, it gets very hot in the mid 40s so make sure you take salt tablets, Malaria tablets, and high Sun screen Hope this helps.

Cairo is a great city, dynamic and lively, amazing and magnificent, with very kind and friendly people. I would like to underline that it is also a very safe city, one of the safest metropolises in the world. Of course, you will need some time to get used to some local customs, as bargaining when shopping, but it won't take too long and you can also shopping without bargaining at some stores. take good care of your money don't be a walking bank for them, especially the cap drivers (taxi drivers) the 10 minuets ride with no traffic jam, its 10 Egyptian pound don't go above this limit, and between you and your self you calculate every time you ride with a taxi, and don't trust no one there except what your heart tells you, my dear friend Egypt is a lovely cheap place but its there people how made it like this a stinky place.

PS: I'm a foreigner student her in Egypt, my advice for go to sharm AL-shaik for one weak and tell me what do you think just try trust me you wont regret it, best wishes bye.
