You need a passport to leave the US, try to apply for one early because it could take quite a few weeks to get it. You won't need a visa until you reach the airport in Cairo, where they will stamp it for you for a small fee. If you want to bypass waiting in line, you can obtain a visa before you leave the States. More convenient but not necessary.
Avoid drinking tap water so you can avoid travellers diarrhea (not pleasant), and be sure to check in with your folks back home from time to time. Visit everything you can think of, and take tons of pictures and remember me while you're there! Lol!
I was planning a trip to Alexandria this Oct, but it didn't work out. :(

You need a passport but you can buy the visa upon arrival at the airport for around 15 euro (17 US$) It is valid for one month. Some advise no short skirts no waist showing no arms showing nos cleavage. You could get in trouble. The majority of women are covered from top to bottom.

you do definitly need a passport to go anywhere outside the usa. I went to egypt from cyprus, I do not remember if they requiere a visa but all you have to do is contanct the airline from which your flying and they will tell you. What I do know is that if you do need visa you can just get it from the airport and pay fee for it, because thats what i did when i did that trip to cyprus, i took advatange of the fact that cyprus is right there in the middle of europe, asia and africa, so got to visit libano, israel and egypt (this was a yr a go, speaking of perfect timing huh?), i just cant remember wich countries requiere the visa. Have lots of fun!

You should always have your passport with you when you leave the USA for official ID purposes. I would be leery of traveling alone to a Muslim country if I were you at this point in time. Friend or no friend, women do not have equal rights in those areas of the world.
