First, what college background do you all ready have? People who want to be vets need to get a solid degree in science, like anatomy, chemistry, basic biology, etc. And while you are getting the degree, you have to be aware of what vet schools want you to take (specific vet schools, mind you). After you earn your bachelor's degree, then you go on to vet school -- another four years of study. Most vets produced today are women, by the way. Before getting into vet school, it is wise to get some experience around animals, by either working in a vet's office or showing that you have farm experience. State exams must also be taken just prior to or after you graduate from vet school.

Fun! Always an interesting career choice and I'm sure Fluffy's or Scaly's the world over will thank you.

Becoming a veterinarian is almost like becoming a doctor except for animals (in requirements). So it does require medical school.

Step-By-Step

1) Good High School Grades especially in Biology and Chemistry (Math doesn't hurt)

2) Application into a pre-med program specializing in animal anotomy and physiology.

3) Medical school for specification or general practice

4) Internship with existing veterinarian.

5) Competency Examination

Start working hard in school now so that you can be eligible for some scholarships and grants. Start applying early.

You will have to go to college and take veterinarian medicine. It is not much easier than taking human medicine. It is one of those jobs that is more of a calling. You might even consider doing some specialization in exotic birds. It is so hard to find a vet who can handle avian medicine too.

Good luck with your future!
