You can reliably tell via a blood test once the marker beta-hcg (human chorionic gonadotrophin) starts being produced. That happens once implantation occurs, which is usually on the fifth or sixth day post-coitus (after sex). An implantation bleed is common, and some women ascribe the bleeding to menstruation. But you CANNOT menstruate during pregnancy, that is a fact. Menstrual bleeding is caused by the shedding of the unused lining of the uterus, where the embryo would be implanted during pregnancy. If you menstruate, then the pregnancy is by definition terminated - you would be having a miscarriage.

Many women do experience bleeding during pregnancy. There are many possible reasons for vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, and although the cause of bleeding in pregnancy often does not pose a threat to the unborn infant or mother, no amount of bleeding is considered "normal". All bleeding during pregnancy should be checked by your doctor or midwife.
