I would live in Memphis. They have one of the best economic conditions in the country there regarding cost of living, unemployment rate, and job growth. At least they did last time I checked, which was a few weeks ago.
Memphis also has a reputation for being pretty eclectic and integrated, more-so than the other cities that you mentioned. And knowing my own personality, I would appreciate that.
I can't say I *wouldn't* live in any of them. But last on my list would be Houston. I'm not a big fan of Texas in general. That is for several reasons, all based on my own experiences there.

I'm from Canada and will admit I haven't travelled to all the places listed here but to other places in the US - but one place on your list I have been to is Atlanta and I would definitely go back there again!!! It was one of the most friendliest places in the south I have ever been to and the people there were very helpful in helping me find my way around. I went all over the place by bus, by subway, by taxi and by foot (for hours at times)(amazing you don't walk that much I found lol) and if I asked for directions everyone I asked was willing to help out and even offered to take me to my destination sometimes. I wanted to sample all the different cultures and history while I was there and DID so visited many parts of the city during my visit and met many of its people. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Hey! I lived in Atlanta from 1995-1997. I will never live in a big city again. I am a country girl and must live near the beach. I still live in Georgia. I emailed you one time and you were in Louisiana. Hey!

I choose neither city listed because they are on the wrong side of the Mason/Dixie Line.
Des Moines is ok for now. Perhaps Kansas City for something with a little more variety.

I live in Houston. The only other U.S. cities I would consider living in would be New York or Chicago.

I would live in Memphis. None of the others, especially N.O., holds any appeal.
