How can 2 different cell phone companies using the same tower, 1 you get service with, but not with the other?

We can get service with one cell phone provider at our house, but not with the other and they both bounce off the same tower close to our house.

Generally their is what called the HEAD COMPANY. They are the one who actually owns it. the other carrier must pay for the use of the tower. Generally the resellers (company that rents it) will not get as strong of a signal because their transmitter is lower. Also, the HEAD CARRIER can add on a repeater. A repeater can broadcast a longer signal. It is a tower add on. The reseller cannot use the repeater. The resellers have NO RIGHTS over the tower. They cannot build repeaters of their own on the tower. Also. Not ALL towers will be used in a roaming agreement. A roaming agreement may have been canceled and they stopped using that tower!

The Cell Phone companies do not all use the same Technolagy. Take for instance, Verizon, they use CDMA, a digital tech. that uses no SIM card, then you have Cingular, they use GSM, More advanced and does use SIM cards. in order for the 2 companies to use the same tower, the tower must have both technolagies on it. Not to mention the other digital tech in the USA called TDMA, oh, and AMPS or Analog. See, lots of reasons why 2 phones from 2 companies will not be equal at any given location. On top of that, the programming of the phone is set to search for towers of its own company, this is called HOME towers, if the one with lesser signal is Registering to a Home tower that is farther away, it will have much less tower, it will only use another companies tower or as we call it ROAM if a HOME tower is not available
