Do you know how good that looks on a college/university application?
Other than that, it's a great talent.
Being a violinist is seen as elegant and intelligent.
If you do learn how to play it, you'll probably get really good at music theory as well.

Take up the violin, or any other instrument for that matter.
If you don't take it up you might regret it later... like I did.
I played the violin for about a week, but my teacher was SO mean.
I ended up quitting, and really regret it.

PS- You should not care if it's seen as 'cool'.
If you worry about things like that you'll only limit yourself in everything.
Who cares what other people think about it?
As long as you like it, fine.
Chances are you will probably never see these same people again in a few years.

If it's cool to you, then it's cool. Why let others define your definition of violin? Who cares what anyone thinks? They shouldn't be altering your life.

I say to try the violin. If you like it, simply continue. If not, just quit. How easy is that? Buy a cheap violin--that way, its flexible on you and you can 'upgrade' to a better one if you want to continue.

The violin (in my opinion) is an awesome instrument. It's about as hard as an instrument can get to become a proficient player. You really need talent and determination to accomplish things so people who succeed at playing it are really worthy of it.

Do it if you want to, not because of others' opinions. As I said, you can always stop. Its better to experienced it firsthand than to regret not having done so--It's better to be safe than sorry!

Good luck.

the violin has become more cool in recent years. There are hip hop violin groups and pop utilizes violins more today. You will not be stuck playing the old classical songs if you do not want to. I wish i had continued to play back in third grade. Plus the acrylic violins are way cool to look at- they are clear!

Who cares what anyone else thinks. If you like it and want to learn it - then it's cool.

A warning, though: It is rather difficult to learn to play well. But don't let that discourage you.
