My favorite is "For Better of For Worse". I have read it for so many years the characters seem like family. And to be honest, they actually remind me of people in my family! The BEST episodes were: When April was saved from drowning by Farley the dog/ Farley's subsequent death; The death of Ellie's mother (which in the strip happened almost exactly when my own mother died); and Anthony rescuing Elizabeth from the masher Howard at the landscaping company. Lynn Johnston has such a grasp on the every day workings of the family; and it is taken largely fromt the experiences of her own life. Read it!

I wish I could give you a good answer. But we're not buying the newspaper, because its a waste of paper and it is like an endorsement to continue polluting the earth with more garbage.
As for the comic strips in the on-line version of the local paper, I'm sorry to say that the majority of them kinda suck. My mom complains that sometimes they re-run old strips.
As for my favorite "comic" I love reading my moms copies of Avengers & X men. Of course I can't read the ones in the sealed plastic, she says those are gonna pay for my college tuition someday. Fortunately she has reprints of the really really old ones to read, and even has some of those really old ones in her collection.

I have a lot that I like, but I would probably pick "9 Chickweed Lane".
If you include online comics, "Girl Genius" is the best!
