What version are you using? If it the current beta then there will always be a few options or features not completely up to date. I have the most current beta version so I can communicate with Windows Live and Yahoo users regardless of which messenger I am using. It is a great new feature and if the ability to use it is measured against a few greyed out options or features I say it is OK. I can put up with a few minor inconvienences while chatting with either messenger.

Good luck and have a nice day!

All options except the Connection & proxy settings are not avaliable to change (these options are disabled or greayed out) untill you first sign in. If you have the latest version of MSN messenger, under Connections option a connection trouble shooter is avaliable which will try to diagnose your connection issue and auto repair the problem. give it a try.
If you are not directly connected to the internet using dialup or DSL etc , like in an office environment i LAN then you need to provide the internet proxy in the proxy box.

When an option is grayed out, it means that the programmeister programmed it that way. In every Windows program, on any page on which you are working, only options that are available to you at that time are dark. Grayed out options are simply not available at that time - to anyone.

As to why you can't sign in, are you sure you were connected to the internet before you tried? If so, I would advise you to uninstall then reinstall, and get a new account.

Remove and reinstall might work. Otherwise try Yahoo messenger it's much better.
