Because it gets them what they want.

Because we don't hold them accountable, and re-elect them anyway, so what incentive do they have to tell the truth.

They don't always lie. But most do because, currently, they're focused on "winning" rather than making a lasting difference in the world and the country. It used to be that you ran for office because you wanted to make things better, and continued to seek office because of this - now it's about selfishness, and not so much doing the right thing as it is getting re-elected and towing party lines.

It stems from a lack of leadership, and, if I may be so offensive, a lack of religious belief uniting the country. People can be good people without beliving in a higher power, but a culture or a country can't aspire to greatness without having something greater to believe in.

For some politicans, it's just not prudent to stand for their values when everyone else is "playing ball." And after a while, they either wind up playing ball or getting kicked out because, currently, the people aren't so much interested in long-term solutions for problems but what can be done now.

It will change, though. We're on one end of a pendulum right now, but it will swing back around again. Just be patient.

Politicians always lie because People want to hear what they want to hear. When two candidates are running and one of the tells the truth and the other says what the public wants to hear, the one who says what the public wants to hear wins the election. Thus, and there are exceptions to this, if you want to win an election, you better start lying, because the guy who's telling you the truth doesn't have a chance.

Because once they attain office, the pressure from all sides is so powerful that most politicians will do anything to keep themselves in office.
