There were many things that happened as many had already mentioned. The highlights would probably be as follows:
Pre-60's
South Vietnamese President Diem is as staunch of a supporter for democracy and Ho Chi Minh is for communism. Diem initially rallies the South Vietnamese country behind him, but undermines his support from his peoiple and the U.S. that leads to his demise.
November 1, 1963. President Diem and his brother are assasinated in a coup not long after President Kennedy was assasinated. Several coups happen over the next few years, until 1967, which causes lots of corruption, destroying public motivation and trust in their government.
September, 1967 - President Nguyen Van Thieu is elected president and remains president until the end of the war.
January 30, 1968 - Tet Offensive. NVA and Viet Cong troops attacks almost every South Vietnamese military base and province capitals at one time. It was a military failure for the NVA and Viet Cong. Viet Cong are all but destroyed as a military force. NVA take months to recover. General Nguyen Giap is quietly relieved of his duties. Unbenouced to North Vietnam at the time, the Tet Offense fueled U.S. anti-war movements enough to lead into the eventual end of the war.
May, 1969 - Vietnamization starts. ARVN starts to take over the fighting from the U.S. troops.
September, 1969 - Ho Chi Minh dies.
October, 1971 - President Thieu win re-election unopposed.
December 1972 - Peace talks with North Vietnam breaks down. Operation Linebacker II starts to force North Vietnam back to the negotiating table.
January, 1973 - Peace talks resume, war with the U.S. officially ends. What's left of the U.S. combat troops are reassigned stateside.
1974 - President Thieu declares war against North Vietnam.
March, 1975 - North Vietnam starts a major military offensive against South Vietnam. What ewas supposed to be a year long campaign ends within two months.
April 30, 1975 - Saigon is taken by NVA soldiers. South Vietnam abdicates. The war officially ends.

The "situation" was that a group of socialist/marxist Americans, and a totally inept President, LBJ, made sure that the US could NOT win in its just and moral commitment to the freedom of the South Vietnamese people in their fight against the global expansion of Communism. The final sellout was when the US Congress withdrew support for the south and left it w/out a means to defend itself.
