If you encounter this it's very sad that people would act in such a inconsiderate manner. I'm handicapped myself with lung disease so it's just a matter of time before I find myself in one should I be around that long. I now carry portable oxygen and have gotten used to the stares it brings from other people, this I feel is a natural reaction so I don't consider that rude. In answer to your question , if your seeing this problem the people must be so self centered as to not realize how much you would prefer to be out of the wheelchair and not inconvenience them the short extra time you need to board the bus. If only they could understand they are only an accident or illness away from the need to use one themselves and know it doesn't always happen to the other guy , that it could strike them also at any given moment.

My ex husband is in a wheelchair and the transportation company here was always really nice. The only thing he ever really got was people staring like they've never seen a wheelchair before.

Most people don't think that. What many people do feel, however, is uncomfortable around people in wheel chairs. It is partly a feeling of guilt, relief to not be in a chair, and just not wanting to offend. Unless you are around people in wheel chairs enough to become comfortable, you just don't know how to act.
Now I have seen several people in wheel chairs that really were RUDE. They acted as if they had a chip on their shoulder and they took it out on everyone around them...but they are the rare exception.

When I used to take the bus, there was this woman who always used to get on with a walker...who took 10 hours, and she would always yell and scream at people if they didn't move..then she'd give the bus driver a hard time if he didn't lower the floor for her right away.

Most are helpfull that I have met.
And I have met several people in chairs that are vets that lost there legs weaving the blanket of freedom you sleep under.
Some are on medication that effects the mind.

Some people are just ignorant and anything that is not what they consider "normal" is something to be criticized and labeled.
