This residency in the United States is at least two years in length, but only after the surgeon completes prerequisite surgical training such as an orthopedic surgery residency ( 5 years) or an ear nose and throat residency ( 4 -5 years). The more common requisite training to become a plastic surgeon is through a general surgery residency for (a minimum of 3 years). The surgeon must be promoted each year to the next level. It would not say much for a surgeon who did three years of surgery, but all at the first year level. So to be approved the surgeon must have at least three years of progressive training, before even entering plastic surgery residency.

This means a total of 5 years at a bare minimum, after medical school. Plastic Surgery is serious surgery not something one can learn in few weekend courses and has one of the ,longest training programs in all of medicine. So consider a 4 year college, then medical school then 5 more years. Pack a lunch!

All the surgical specialties are very competitive so you have to have stellar grades as well as other aspects that will help you standout: research, volunteer work, etc. First you should decide if medicine is for you: talk to doctors, medical students, medical residents. There are lots of different specialties within the field of medicine so you should not limit your choices until you know more about the other fields. Also you have to decide if the lifestyle will be a fit with you. You will have to spend long hours studying in medical school, residency in surgery is especially grueling with long hours in the hospital. I'm not trying to discourage you from going into medicine, but you should know the facts because you'd hate to have spent so much time and energy an not end up liking it. Medicine can be extremely rewarding, it is one of the few jobs were you can make life and death decisions and change people's lives forever.

Generally, you have to go to a college to get a bachelors (4 years) in a science like biology or chemistry, then you have to apply to medical school and when you get in it usually takes about 4 years to complete that, then to specialize (to be a plastic surgeon) takes another 2-4 years. So, going through to do medicine takes a long time, but its well worth it in the end. If you'd like to see what colleges offer medicine go to www.gradschools.com You can also go to your local library and look in the occupational outlook handbook for plastic surgeon and they will tell you everything it takes to do it, the skills needed, etc. It's really a great reference!

Good luck on your career!

You have to go to Medical School then specialize in Plastic surgery. Medical school will take you anywhere from 6-8 years and I belive specialties could take up to 4 years. Remember though this is to get in to the feild then you have to be a resident doctor for up to 4 years. Only going schooling is a must you will never be out of school in the medical feild. Like medicgvd said pack a lunch.

Basic answer is yes. A plastic surgeon is a doctor, just like any other doctor.

4 years of regular college.

4 years of medical school (I think)

2 years of residency

2 years of residency in the specialty (I think)

Sounds like a lot, but all doctors go through something like this.

It can take you anywhere from 3 to 5 years to get your undergraduate degree. It depends on where you go to school, what you major in, and if you have a minor or a second major. The whole residency will take at least 5 years after medical school. The link below will give you more details.

Yes, and depending on how many classes you take per semester it could take between 8 and 10 years.
