I like Amityville
It may be total BS and it may not but it was freaky when I saw it when I was a kid.
I also liked 13 Ghosts. Pretty graphic
The Grudge
Stir of Echoes

Last night I watched the Japanese movie that the new movie Pulse was based on. It was called Kairo (also known as Pulse in video stores now because of the new movie). Really creepy ghosts. I also recommend a little-known movie called Session 9.

Unfortunately, these days ghost are always taking physical form, like in all the Japanese horror remakes. Even 13 Ghosts has mortal form ... I'm for good ole Poltergeist, still tense, and The Others with Nicole Kidman.

Great "shadow" killer type movies such as "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and my personal fav "Nightmare on Elm Street." More demon/hell type horror movies would be "The Omen", "The Exorcist", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", "The Amityville Horror" and "Rosemary's Baby". You could also check out some classics, such as "Psycho", "The Fly", "The Birds", and "House of Wax". Or some newer fun/scary movies such as "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "Scream", "Final Destination", and "Resident Evil". If you would like to go by great horror movie directors I would check out Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Alfred Hitchcock, and M Night Shamaylan. They can all be loads of fun.

I didn't find white noise that scary but The amittyville horror(2005) was great. The first one wasn't scary but the remake really creeped me out. The grudge is another one that really creeped me out and I usually don't get scared to easily.

Yeah that was creepy. I had dreams about that one after I went to bed. I don't know if you like older movies, but The Entity is supposed to be pretty scary too, and based on a true story.

one that I have always liked and it does include a ghost is "Lady in White"...not that it is so scary, but eerie and haunting. It's older, but good.
