Keratinisation is a form of cell division. The skin is made of two main layers. The outermost layer-The Epidermis and the inner layer or the Dermis(which is active containing hair muscles, blood and supply, sebaceous glands and nerves.
Keratanisation--The skin cells are constantly reproducing. In the lower epidermis new cells are formed by cell division, the newly formed cells move towards the surface where they eventually die and flake off through the process of necrobiosis. In the epidermis the cells become flatter and keratinised which makes them tougher and waterproof.

skin is composed of keratinised stratified squamous epithelium which has several layers. Near the surface, one of the layers has within it keratin granules. Keratin is a protein that these cells express. It is an alpha helice. As these cells migrate towards the surface, more and more keratin is produced. The nucleus and other organelles begin to disintigrate, and eventually the cells die. The remaining keratin helices entangle to form an interlocking web that becomes filled with fatty residues which waterproofs and toughens the outer layers of skin.
