If I had kids I wouldn't buy them one until they needed it. I got one whe I was in 8th grade (I was 14 I think) I needed it b/c I was walking to my grandma's house after school if my parents couldn't come get me. But if i had kids they would have to be at last in middle school. I don't understand why ELEMENTARY kids are walking around w/ cellphones better than mine and can't multiply, divide or spell their name!

They have new cell phones now designed with kids in mind. They only have about 4 or 5 buttons on them ... all for preset numbers like Mom-work; Mom-cell; Dad-work; Dad-cell & an emergency button that'll dial 9-1-1-. No texting available. I think they're a brilliant idea for the youngsters that walk home & just need to call their parents or for emergencies. Some have more phonebook capabilities that parent's can program for their kids.
Not sure how old your child is, but if they're under 15 these could be what you're looking for. My daughter is only 7 & is already asking for one & I just keep saying "NO". She doesn't even use our house phone socially yet... why the heck does she need a cell phone?!

I would get them a cell phone at 13 because that's about the time your kids want to go places with their friends and without their parents

Not if they really need it. I dont even have my cell phone yet and I'm a teenager. Most of my friends are getting their's when they start to drive. I think 16 is a good age, unless they're gone alot.

by using fact some mum and dad are keen for them to advance up and be hoochie mamas. I agree what the heck is a 10 12 months previous doing wanting a telephone. What take place to calling the college while you're working late....thats in simple terms an excuse to grant them what they want and what maximum of there acquaintances have already got. regardless of if it does look that much less human beings have land line telephones now a days.

I'm thinking the same thing. My daughter will be attending a new school and I'll need to be able to reach her...she's 12...so being responsible for something that expensive isn't likely going to happen. I'm going to measure the distance between home and school and look into those little radio sets that they sell for families to keep in touch in places like malls or amusement parks. That way if she loses it, someone won't be able to run up a huge bill on me. And if I get a set (I'll already have spares)

Yes but only once he/she understood that it was for serious things only and if they just wanted to chat that they could wait till the evening when it was free and that if they made a lot of charges for extra min. (say over $20.00) that they would be doing extra chores to pay for it! And that they would have to pay for alll extras on it (ring tones, games Etc. Etc. Etc.) So I'd Say age wise about 13. Unless they are mature enough to handle all of this before then!
