Coz if they got together in the beginning of the movie, they couldn't stretch the plot out to 98 mins.
It's like when Superman had to spin the planet backwards to save Lois or when Marty McFly had to go back to save Doc, if they just bent time slightly differently, they wouldn't have to go thru all of that effort.

They were living in two deminsions, and times weren't set in the same place as one another. I thought about that question too!
