hero. Its a fine line because depending on the comics you read he often kills people in the aftermath (ultimates).
The thing is that he overall is a hero. The brilliance of his character is that often the line between him being a hero and a misunderstood monster is very fine. There are a few really good hulk stories that can show this really well.
If you want really good hulk reading check out the new planet hulk storyline.

I've always considered The Hulk as a misunderstood child, where temper-tamptrums erupt in fury. Fortunately for the Marvel universe, these rages are taken out on those that deserve it ie: the bad guys. Throw into the mix that he is a tragic character, and you have the makings of a hero.
Note that Doctor Banner helps out a lot also.
The allegories with Hulk and 'The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde' are right on. Ask Stan Lee if you get a chance.

I think that he is more of a hero than a villain. Most of the comics that I have read about the Hulk, he has been more of a hero than anything else. Even as the Gray Hulk he can have a heart. The issue where Betty and Bruce lost their baby was a real tear jerk-er. You saw this panel where Gray Hulk was holding Betty in his arms; that was so touching.

hulk want to be left alone, and only attacks when provoked, but in the process he saves ever one from power full enemies that would take over the world. So he doesn't know hes a hero but he is. It's just when the police or army go after like lets say spider man, spider man will just leave, and hulk weell hulk will smash lol

The inspiration for the movies comes from the comics. The Hulk has been a hero in comics for a very, very long time.

That is tough. I think in Hulk form he is a villian. One- because his power comes from anger & hate, which are classic evil emotions. Two- because he destroys stuff in a blind rage. (Not to mention there is another one of those mean words- rage) Still- kindness shines through from time to time.
When he is in his classic human form then he is kind-hearted and chartiable if you would.
This charachter, in my opinion, is also based of the classic tale of "Dr.Jekyl & Mr.Hyde" and in that tale Mr.Hyde was a monster with a bit of a heart as well.
So- both but if you really have to choose one then- hero because with the help of his human form he usually saves the day.

hes a bit of an anti-hero,
as people pity & fear him which you can see really well in the original comics,
hes also not evil just misunderstood, which again shows him as the anti-hero.
try reading some of the older comics, youll probably find that the film and TV show dont do him any justice in his portrayal, apart from the smashing things up, i can just about remember in one of the comics i read he jumped onto the moon!
