It really all dpends onthe company. Yes there are some great Japanese car companies but at the same time there is the other end of the spectrum. The same thing goes for European.

Japanese car makers like Toyota, Subaru and Honda are top quality automotive manufacturers with little problems per 100 vehicles. All parts are 100% company made in Japan. Mazda on the other hand is owned by Ford in a percentage so the engine, transmission and chassis are essentially shared between each other. This can be good if you are looking for parts but bad in the sense that Ford has been on a pretty big slump interms of overall quality and reliability.

European cars can include such companies from Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Vokswagen Mercedes-Benz and Fiat. All of such companies are on the bottom end of the overall reliability and build quality spectrum. However on the other end of the scale you find car companis like Audi, Porsche, BMW, Lamborghini.

I'm going to tell you this, most European car companies (with the exception of a few) don't quite make very well built cars. I can name you dozens of European car companies and only maybe 5-6 willhave strong and reliable service with well built quality cars.

Land Rover, TVR, Aston Martin, Jaguar are all British based comanies but all have some moderate reliability issues. Land Rover having severe elecrical problems, Jaguar using basically 90% of parts from Ford. Even Ferrari is having quality issues.

What I find funny about this whole issue is that if you look at VW Groupe , they own Audi GmBH, Lamborghini in essence (Audi owns Lamborghini), Bentley and share parts with Porsche, yet Volkswagen has poor reliability. The problem lies in the fact that VW makes almost all there cars with the expection of the Phateton in Mexico and Brazil.

European are japanese cars are both great, although European cars see more expensive because they tend come fully loaded, as japanese cars don't. They are add-ons to trim levels which are up to the price of the car later. VW, great cars, pricy, Acura/honda, awesome cars, but not amny standard options.

I guess it depends on how you quantify quality. If you mean reliability, I think the Japanese have it, although in recent months we have witnessed a number of large-volume recalls of Japanese cars.

It all depends on the car, and the price you pay. Japanese cars are reliable, and not too awfull to fix when they break, but European cars like Mercedes can cost a fortune to fix.

I'm a big purchaser of Japanese cars, but my dream car is a Jaguar. The only way I'll ever afford one is to win the lottery!

overall, Japanese vehicles have been more reliable and lest costly to maintain (mainly Lexus, Toyota), that doesn't mean every model carries that reputation, you should pick the models that you are interested in and do research on those particular models ( consumer reports, autotrader.com, various auto magazines, etc) then make an educated choice
