I am a bartender/server. i have been doing it for 4+ years and for all you people who don't tip just because.....remember we do only get paid 2.13 an hour. we don't serve you just because we WANT to...we are probably doing it because we are working our way through school and this is the most flexible way to do it. if you don't tip well....we will remember who you are...thats all i have to say about that. oh, i agree, the church crowd is the worst! I think everyone should have to wait tables once in their lives. it is not as easy as you think and much more stressful than you can imagine!

The tip I leave for the waiter/waitress is based not only on his/her performance but I also take into consideration how busy the place is at the time. I will give them some slack if they are a little slow due to the crowd. The food is not the servers fault although, if it is obviously wrong the server should not accept it on behalf of her customer. A black steak is not med or rare, don't bring it to the table. Ask that it be redone and go explain that it was not acceptable and is being redone. That will get you a huge tip. It tells me that you are giving me the attention that I am tipping for. Large families, as much work on your part that they are, cannot usually tip more that a small amount after such a large bill. They should however clean up the table and organize their dishes to minimize your work. I used to pick up any food my toddlers dropped and wiped down the chair they sat in. That is just common courtesy. You are waitstaff not maids. I am sorry that you are not treated fairly, maybe its the place you work.

When I get crappy service --such as the waitress standing with other people chatting and laughing or ignoring me during a meal by letting me sit there without something to drink and the place is NOT that busy, then I leave her a penny. I do that to let her know that the service provided was crappy. I dont have to have a waiter or waitress hovering over me, but I have a problem with them not doing their job. I tip well if the meal is late coming out from the kitchen; but it better not be because the waitress forgot to put the order in (that has happened to me before), or that she stopped to chat with friends for 5 minutes ( that has happened too). If that is the case --then again a penny tip.

I only give a tip if the service is good. Which is most of the time, actually... If a waitress is extra friendly or attentive, I usually give an extra tip. If a waitress is rude, inattentive, or otherwise not doing her/his job, I do not leave a tip.
I think if more people realized that most of these restaurants are only paying their waitstaff less than HALF of the minimum wage ($2.13 at some places!!), they would leave tips to deserving waiters/waitresses. I think the laws should be changed, and min. wage should apply to waitstaff.
In some cases, the person may have forgot the tip... It happens.

If my meal takes a long time and the waitress does nothing, I will tip poorly. However if the meal takes a long time and the waitress appologizes, makes sure our drinks are kept up and sometimes even gets the manager to not charge us because it took so long, I give a huge tip. It's the quality of service I tip.

People don't realize that tips are a major part of a waitress's pay. And that a waitress is penalized by a slow cook even more than they are. (Although cooks have their problem, too.) If the problem gets too bad, could you ask your boss to suggest a 20 percent tip on the menu? Or even make it part of the bill?

I do not like to wait for the check after I finish my meal. I dont eat out often, but almost every time I do I end up waiting 10-15 minutes for the bill! If this happens, there is no tip. Also no tip for waitresses and waiter that dont shut and that constantly ask us how are food is, this bothers me. Waiting on someone is easy, if you cannot do it, then dont. STAY IN THE BACK AND WASH THE DISHES!

i look @ that n 2 ways...
1 - i'm a long way from home, don't want fast food, lo on cash and i may not have enough 2 tip as well as i should.
2 - your service 2 me was not good and i'm telling u so financially and not verbally.
even if it's not your fault the chef's n the bak have their bad times, your service is all i will c.
4 example n the case of #1 above, my bill is $8.97, i'll leave a $10 spot and walk out. just because i'm embarassed about giving u a small tip. on a good money day, your good service would get u a $3 - $4 tip. this all assumes a good tip is %20.

tipping is getting outta control. waitress and waiters EXPECT a tip when sometimes it isnt deserved. dont come to my table and ask me if i need a min when i dont even have a menu, dont walk up 30seconds after you have given me my meal and as i bite into the first piece ask me if its ok .... not hing i hate more than to have to nod or quickly chew whats in my mouth to tell the waitress "ITS FINE" sometimes i just wanna spit it out and ask her to try, its not like ive had enought time to taste anything. also if you are chit-chatting with co-workers, no tip. dont stand there tappin your heels, yappin your gums to your cute bus-boy while im sitting there wanting a drink or some more bread. before i leave the restaurant, usually im the one who is owed a tip. you have that job knowing you work for tips. if you cant do it where you are entitled to one after every table leaves, go to school and get an education so that waiting on tables isnt your only option.

Some people just truly do not know how much to tip. They think giving a dollar or two is good enough. Or some people are very stingy with their money and don't think the waitress needs it, they do not know you are relying on those tips for income. It is amazing what people do not know these days! You wish you could put a sign on your apron, "standard tip: 20%, thank you"

I am a picky tipper. I worked in restaurants though college. If service is bad I'll tip very little or nothing. If service is great, then it's a different story.
yes if the server got my order wrong, then it's their fault
If my drink sits empty for more than a minute tip goes way down
If they leave the pitcher of iced tea on the table, tip goes way up
