If you think of a two-digit number, and then reverse the digits, the difference will always be a multiple of 9.
Like for example:
43 - 34 = 9
86 - 68 = 18 = 9 x 2
41 - 14 = 27 = 9 x 3
73 - 37 = 36 = 9 x 4
and so on and so on ...
Now, look at the table of symbols. All the numbers that are multiples of 9 (18,27,36,45, etc.) have the same symbol.
Nothin' to it ...

there is only a limited possible number of resulting numbers if you substract the two numbers from the original 2 digit number. They are:
9, 18, 27, 36, 38, 45, 49, 52, 54, 63, 72, 81 and 92.
So the symbol next to those numbers is the one that should be in the square. Also, every time you try again they change the symbols around so you don't get the same symbol.

Nothing the least creepy about it. Every time you refresh the page, every number will give you the exact same symbol. It's based on the properties of 9, every number you choose will go into a 9.
In the example they give on the page, 45, 4+5 is what? Yep, nine. Take any other number, same thing, nine. same symbol. Refresh the page, only the symbol changes, now instead of this, you get this.
Want to prove it to yourself? Don't refresh the page, but come up with different answers, and use your back button to see what symbol you get with the various numbers. Wow, how about that, same symbol...hmmmmmmmm

The formula always gives you an answer that is a multiple of 9. The symbols change each time you try this but all multiples of 9 have the same symbol so you always get the symbol you are looking at.

if it creeps you out so much, stop going to it or has it become an uncontrollable desire to see if it would work another time or was it just a fluke.
