A nautical mile is equal to 1.16 standard miles. The key is that 60 nautical miles equals one degree of latitude (one degree of longitude at the equator) or one nautical mile is equal to one minute of latitude (or one minute of longitude at the equator). It was developed as marine navigation developed hundreds of years ago.
It is used in aviation because aviation systems were based on marine navigation.

A nautical mile is equal to about 1.1 miles. It is the distance of one minute on the map. Charts and GPS all have minutes logged, so it was simply an easy uniform unit of measure. The only industries that use nautical miles that I am aware of are boating and air related. If you know others, I would be interested in finding out.
