I was recently told that my name is down as owner of a vacant lot that I used to rent a trailer on. I never bought the land or had anything to do with it since I moved almost seven years ago. How do I find out if my name is down as owner and what to do if it is?

Contact theCounty Clerk in the area where the land is located. Ask for a report of who is on the DEED OF RECORD. If it's your name, you may be behind on taxes...and the land may have already been sold to pay those taxes...so the sooner you contact them the better.

Presumably it has an address. If so you can get the owner's name from the local tax assessor's office -- maybe even on line.
If you just want to get rid of it don't pay the taxes. Pretty soon the county will get rid of it for you. My guess is, after 7 years, you no longer have any legal interest in it anyway.

I agree, check with your county appraiser's office. Ours is online, the address is used to search.

If you find your name is on a deed, I would definitely contact a lawyer, before going any farther. If you were renting a trailer, you need to find out how your name ended up on a property deed. If it was done illegally, I would hope you wouldn't be held responsible for property taxes.
Good Luck...

Your county may have the clerks office online and if so they may also have a link to search property information. It costs $2.04 for my state to get a print out of the owners but its free to see who's name that property is in currently. Good luck

find out where the land is and go to that city's public records office. If you do own land there, there should be a title in your name.
