For about $20 you can buy a USB Hub. It has a cable that hooks into your 1 USB port attacjed to a same box with 4 USB ports. This will allow you to attach the network card and the Ipod at the same time and keep them out of the way of you power cord. (I have a C610 Latitude with the same situation. And mine was also free - got it from work when the compnay retired that model last year)

With laptops your options for upgrades are limited. The most you can probably do is upgrade the memory and swap out the hard drive for a newer, larger one. As far as processor, video card, and other hardware, most of these are not upgradable on a laptop.
Most laptops also have a PCMCIA slot or two. You can add additional items there such as wireless adapters.
You can also look into getting external devices such as a USB memory card reader or external CD/DVD writer. Most laptops also have external ports for keyboard, mouses, and monitors.

For the cost of upgrading you'd be better off saving up for a new Dell model that comes with up to 6 USB ports. Most upgrades would be external and you really don't want that.

You can see if there is a docking port available for it. You can add lots of plug-ins and ports to it then.
If you go to the Dell website, log in, and enter your System Tag ID, it'll show you all of the peripherals that are available for it.
I thought you said you were going to school. Shouldn't you be doing your own homework?

If you need more usb ports, then you need to buy a usb hub. It plugs into your current usb port and creates more ports.
