It certainly isn't legal today, but I was wondering if this was EVER a legal practice. I know that it was once legal for people to smoke in the workplace, but how about in a school?

actually if I'm not mistaken I think it was, including on high school campus they used to have specific sections where smokers could smoke at. In addition, back when my older sister was in elementary school (this was in the 70s) she told me about her 4th grade teacher who smoked in class everyday. I sure there wasn't a law at that point that make smoking illegal inside but I'm sure after complaints from students and parents towards their health a law was established...

My second grade teacher Mr. Woodfin used to smoke in class. They requested that he not, but it was only a request, so he just cut down. I think that was some of the kids complained about the smell, not because of any kind of rule or policy.

This was in 1964.

School teachers never smoked in class, but college professors sure did, back about 40 years ago.

no, not in the classroom but I remember seeing them light up in the
teachers lounges. I more recently remember people in grocery stores
puffing cigarettes - disgusting.

I recall male teachers smoking pipes. It was considered quite scholarly, actually.
