Some people need to die. It is just better for the rest of us.

From a strictly moral perspective, I don't have many qualms with applying the death penalty to someone who commits a truly heinous crime.

As a practical matter, I am opposed to the death penalty. It gives the state too much power. Since the punishment is irrevocable and can not be compensated, I would need assurance that it would NEVER be applied on an innocent person, and our system could never give such a guarantee.

It is worth letting 100 murderers spend life in jail rather than putting one innocent man to death.

In my 42 years I have not been able to be firmly on one side of this issue or the other. I can totally relate to the idea of wanting the person who killed my loved one to also die. I'd probably feel the same way if put in that situatioin. God forbid that anyone should face it. But I don't think we have the right to decide who lives and who dies. The death penalty is not a deterrent to crime, so that argument doesn't fly with me. Killing is just wrong. Period.
Both sides make sense to me. See why I can't decide?

Against it. What does it accomplish besides putting us in the same category as a murderer?? I believe in life sentences for the appropriate crimes but never the death penalty. And it's proven not to be a deterrent. Look at the state of Texas for a good example. Some people say it gives them closure as a victim or victim's family but does it really?? I would be devastated if one of my family or friends were murdered but never to a point of wanting the person killed.

Our court systems are far too unreliable for me to support the death penalty. Too many innocent people have been put to death, not to mention that it costs more to execute somebody than it does to imprison them for life, and also the fact that the technique of the lethal injection was originally used by the Nazis to kill Jews.

Also, here's an interesting paradox: if you execute somebody who later turns out to be innocent, you have needlessly taken a human life. Shouldn't you theoretically have to stand trial for what you have done?

Against. The state already has so much power over us, it shouldn't be in the business of ending lives.

Also, deciding capital cases is hard on juries; handing down death sentences is hard on judges; and carrying out executions is damned hard on corrections personnel. Nobody should have to do that kind of work.
