for the first time in 17 years of marriage I had to ask my neighbour to lend me a few teabags. How embarrassing was that.

I didn't spell neighbour wrong i'm English. And I wasn't really embarrassed I just wanted to add something. And being married for 17 years has nothing to do with it, my you are picky today.
Yes I will give them back, I thought I would drop them in her shopping trolley when we next went shopping together.

When I was younger my family had to borrow sugar and other things from neighbors, but they also sometimes borrowed from us. We all were poor, and we helped each other out in many ways. However, things seemed to have changed. Neighbors are often just not that close anymore.

Dont be embarrassed, only if you dont know them and you dont talk to them, then that is not a good thing, it is important to be able to know your neighbours in times of need and for your own safety, if you dont then I suggest taking the time to get to know them, See about having a community party or bbq, it is important, and very much soo if you have kids, this way you can reconized(sp) who lives there and how does not, and also may help with keeping the neighbourhood value up, I had borrowed sugar, butter, eggs, flour, and other things, and if they need something then I hope they feel free to ask, sometimes we have given out meat. and bread,

LOL! I have borrowed cinnamon for an apple pie I wan in the middle of making!

And yes very embarrassing.. I guess because it is not as common now days... I have also borrowed a stamp on a Sunday when I couldn't get one anywhere else!

and thankfully we have great ones! ♥

But then I have had them ask to barrow ant spray, and also watched their kids for them! So it goes both ways!
That is what we are for though right? Neighbors are supposed to be neighborly! ♥

I never have but thats only because I have never had neighbours nice enough. Id rather go to the shops or live without rather than ask my neighbours. I know my sister does it though, her neighbours are lovely. I dont see anything wrong with it and like you have said you plan to pay her back.

Does the length of time you are married have any context in this question?

What happens if you are unmarried and need a cup of sugar, or what if you have only been married a year or two. Do you have to be married to your neighbour, or can you be married to anyone?

I only ask as I have not borrowed anything yet, and i need to know if I have to wait for 15 years, or be married to my neighbour

Sweetheart IT doesn't matter how long you have been married , you had a need for teabags and your neighbor was there for you . Just remember when you go grocery shopping you buy your neighbor a small box of teabags and show your appreciation and that should alleviate your feelings of embarrassment .

No. Would never ask my neighbour for anything but only because I try to avoid her as much as possible. She's a bit loony and I should probably be more tolerant as I think she's just incredibly lonely but it drives me mad when she stands in the corridor of our appartment block next to my bedroom at 2 in the morning shouting her head off down her mobile phone. How I haven't floored her one is beyond me! I dread bumping into her on the stairs because she always tries to get me into conversation and when my friends leave my flat, she runs out of her flat to turn the lights on the stairs off. She is a real strange ranger! Anyway, moan, moan about my neighbour. Thanks for letting me get it off my chest. So, the short answer is - no I have never borrowed anything form my neighbour and never will! x

i have borrowed eggs and flour. considering we are acquaintances, we are continually there. in the adventure that they prefer a want, I go back it. also, I supply them a number of what I make with it. If i can't try this (because that is all gone or some thing), i purchase them an total new bag of flour or carton of eggs.

no I have not, but I have only once been asked if I had a cup of sugar. She was so embarrassed, I never did go next door to borrow anything.

Yes I have, I've also borrowed a stick of butter. It wasn't embarrassing. People run out of things and other people help them out. My neighbors borrow stuff from me as well. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
