Well "ploobis" has a great taste in music, for the most part 99% of the bands named aren't punk and will never be. To be punk means to be free of all and live life by your own ideals regardless of others perception of you. All American rejects are not punk, Maybe Gay but not punk, AX7 are nothing but racist and ignorant kids delivering their incognito ignorant lyrics to unsuspecting emotionally disturbed kids. Korn is great but "Not Punk", Green day? sellouts, not punk just whinny, simple plan ... okay music if you're the whinny loser type that can't get a date and loves to complain and not punk. Great punk bands don't get too much recognition because they sing about life and what really goes on in the world. A really must for punk is "Anti Flag" (Anti Flag it means united not "Anti American") It also depends on what sort of punk you're talking about, street punk, skate punk, gutter punk, political punk, straight edge, all diff sorts of variations of Punk......
Black flag, the Ramones, Sex-pistols, Operation Ivy.the vandals, casualties, thought riot, strung out, Kut U Up, pennywise,Thrice(older albums), pulley, millencolin, and so on..oh and blink 182 was punk, "was" ..

The Clash. I mean we could argue the Ramones and the Sex Pistols but they would still call The Clash the grandfathers of punk rock....I myself am a big fan of Bad Religion, Ten Foot Pole, Operation Ivy, NOFX I dig that genre of punk myself.

a real punk band would not want to be considered "the best" at anything, nor would they probably want to be labeled a "punk band"

my favorite is the Dead Kennedys, though

Half these answers couldn't even remotely be considered punk.

Rancid is the best band of any genre. period.
Maybe the Clash because they were pretty awesome and influenced a lot of really good music and paved the way.
