M Theory (sometimes also called U-theory) was proposed in 1995 by Prof Edward Witten, who showed that the five variations of Superstring Theories are actually the same theory by demonstrating that they are mathematically equivalent. In M Theory, the number of extra spatial dimensions increased from 6 to 7. The additional extra dimension allows multiple branes (or membranes) to coexist side by side (each brane would be equivalent to a universe with 10 dimensions, 6 of which are curled-up or compactified). It has been suggested that "M" in M Theory stands for Matrix, Master, Membrane, Mystery, or Magic. But no one knows for sure.

Check out Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" - talks about string and M theory without getting too technical.

it is the theory that inside all atoms, ideed, what atoms are made of, is "strings" that cross into other dimensions and let them be connected and yet seperate. look at the dimensions as slices of bread that are stacked together. the "strings"cross between the slices and unify all the universes. the m theory is also called the string theory.

It's another way of defining string theory but in it things are stable unlike the string theory which is unstable.

It's another try at using 'string theory' as a way of achieving grand unification.
