That's an excellent movie, for the performances. The plot becomes a bit dark, but any time John Malkovich gets to play an intelligent, well-spoken character, he's fantastic. The rest of the cast is first rate as well; Glen Close, Michelle Pfiffer, even Uma Thurman in an early role and what could be Keanu Reeves singular best job of acting I've ever seen him turn out. Even though it's a period piece, if you appreciate something extremely well-acted and written, you should be able to look past it.
I will have to say, the ending (I mean the very end) left me wondering exactly what was going on. It's obvious the director intended some specific meaning attached to it, but I don't know what it is, if you watch it and figure it out, tell me, because I'd like to be clued in.
Another movie based on the same story, but from a slightly different perspective and with some changes to the story which I think may have even been an improvement (I would rank the acting in Dangerous Liasons better, but it wasn't a big gap) was Valmont, starring Colin Firth, Annette Benning, and I the actress who's a big poker player now but I can't remember her name. In any event, it's worth watching too.
