On the Yahoo! homepage there is a video of lava from a volcano in Hawaii dripping down into the ocean. Is that harmful to the water or what? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Marine life in the immediate vicinity will be killed, that in close proximity will be affected. The two main problems being the heating and acidification of the water. Fishermen who fish the area may have to move to other waters.

Because of the movement of the ocean the heated, acidic water is soon dissipated and when mixed with the rest of the ocean it's effects are negligible. If there were thousands of volcanoes all pouring lava into the oceans at the same time, and on a very large scale, then the cumulative effect would be disastrous - the oceans would heat up and global warming would be rapidly accelerated.

Such an event is highly unlikely and would most probably be triggered by something such as a very large meteorite or asteroid hitting the earth.

The oceans are warming up and the ice-caps are melting, lava flowing into the oceans will exacerbate this but on such a small scale it's rather like putting one drip of hot water into a bath full of cold water.
