I am in a constant state of whelm. Even Steven, baby. Never too high, never too low.

Your interesting question lead me to seek the etymology of the word "whelm" Look at the history of the word below:

whelm
c.1300, probably from a parallel form of O.E. -hwielfan (W.Saxon), -hwelfan (Mercian), in ahwelfan "cover over;" probably altered by association with O.E. helmian "to cover" (see helmet).

(If I read it correctly, it looks like it means "helmet")

So I decided to seek the word "whelm" in the dictionary. This is what I found:

whelm
tr.v. whelmed, whelm·ing, whelms

To cover with water; submerge.

What I draw from this is that when one is overwhelmed, it means that water covers the helmet---- kind of like drowning!

I don't think one can manage to just be "whelmed"...

Please let me know if you need more information before you choose the best answer!

Sorry, but I think whelming should be done only by consenting adults in the privacy of their own home. Whelming is no spectator sport!
