In the American League, the Yankees will ride the return of Sheffield and Matsui to the East title, the White Sox will catch the Tigers in the Central as Detroit's young pitchers tire down the stretch, and the Athletics will make their usual August magic and sneak past the Angels for the West crown. The Tigers will win the wild card and beat Oakland in five thanks to a superior offense. Chicago's pitching staff will find itself in the playoffs, and the White Sox will get past the Yankees in six. In an all-Central championship series, the Tigers beat the White Sox in an epic seven-game series thanks to great situational hitting and a tremendous bullpen.
In the National League, the Mets will cruise to the East title, using their huge lead to get their starting pitchers healthy. The Cardinals will win the Central despite mediocre pitching and injury problems. In the West, the Diamondbacks will edge the Dodgers thanks to big contributions from their young talent, but the Dodgers will win the wild card. The Mets will beat the Dodgers in five games, and the Diamondbacks will beat the Cardinals in seven. New York, with a well-rested rotation and a lineup in a groove, will sweep the championship series.
The Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets will meet in the World Series, a matchup of one of the best pitching staffs in baseball against one of the game's top lineups. Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine will win their starts for the Mets, but Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman, and Justin Verlander will be too much for even New York's hitters to handle. The Tigers win the World Series in six games.
