Mildew is caused by moisture. If you get mildew in a closet, you need to find out where the moisture is coming from, or dehumidify the closet.
There are tubs and bags of dehumidifying agents available in hardware and department stores, that you put in places to dry them out.

If there's a light in there use a low watt bulb and keep it on for part of the day to help control moisture. In high humidity it can get too damp inside of a closed up closet.
Also good to clean out the closet very well at least once per year remove everything and wash the closet well. Be sure you keep clothing clean.
Clean and dry that's the rule.

there is a product called "damprid".
small can you place in closet. replace it regularly.
or you can get a small dehumidifier.
or leave the door open a little so the air circulates with the rest of the house.

leave the door open a bit, run a low wat light bulb 60-100 all the time, it keeps the air dry, make sure all clothes are clean and dry, and dont leave piles in the closets on the floors, I know I have to clean out my sons closet all the time. keeping the air dry, and ventilating is key to keeping mildew away.
