The back of my computer has a fan, and the fan stopped working.

Now, when it heats up, the computer shuts off automatically.

Is this something that i can replace myself, or do I need to take it to some computer repair shop??

Currently, i use a small portable fan that i have plugged in, as a temporary replacement.

Any SERIOUS advice would be appreciated...

Is this a very ''expensive'' thing to fix??

just replace it.

if it's next to where the power cord plugs in, you'll need to buy a whole new power supply unit.

if it's just a case fan, they're very easy to replace.

if you're not sure, open the case and see whether the fan is part of the large box in the corner or just screwed to the side of the case with a red/white wire that connects it to the power supply.

EDIT: obviously you need to be sure whether it's the case fan or power supply fan which is broken, but it is not expensive at all to fix. case fans are pennies, power supply units are dollars or pounds. like people have said, avoid using your pc until this problem is fixed or you will permanently damage your cpu due to the overheating issue.

don't forget to 'accept' this answer if it helped.

i assume the fan that you are talking is the power supply fan, because you said it shut down automatically, defective chassis fan don't do that. If you know how to use the soldering iron and the multi tester you can replace the fan itself. but if not, i recommend you to buy the same type of power supply. unscrew the cpu cover, remove all the connection from cdrom, mother board, floppy, hard disk, etc. unscrew the power supply from the CPU, replace the power supply and do the opposite of 2nd step. and 1st step. be care full on the stattic, touch any metal object before you start such as you cpu cassing. caution on the processor and memory module on your mother board, their are also sensitive from static and bumps.

You can certainly replace it yourself. It is not so hard. However, I would unscrew the fan, and bring it with you to the shop where you buy the replacement so they get you a good fan.

You should NOT run the computer until you replace the fan. Otherwise, you may damage your computer, and the costs would be significant.

You are going to burn out the processor, and a few other things if you don't get the fan replaced.... Take it to the shop, unless you are familiar enough with wattage and ohm's to do it yourself......
