It depends on the genre of metal you're looking for. I'm particularly fond of the following bands (although some people might quibble about the finer points of the genres, these are close enough):
Stoner / Doom Metal (tends to sound like slow Black Sabbath songs):
Monster Magnet, Sleep, Isis, Boris, Cult Of Luna
Black / Death Metal (tends to sound like Iron Maiden / Slayer, only faster and heavier; lyrical content tends to be VERY dark, may be objectionable due to political / religious beliefs):
Opeth, Emperor, Cradle Of Filth, At The Gates, The Haunted, In Flames, Arch Enemy, God Forbid

My present day primary metallic bands are Blut aus Nords and Deathspell Omega (black metallic), Nile (loss of life metallic), and 9 Inch Nails (business metallic). My primary rock bands are Coheed and Cambria and gadget of a Down. provide those a try - there is a few large form there.
