I've tried Encarta - sucked!
I've tried Britannica - sucked!
Wiki has more links, internal and external, than either of the other ones. You can access it as much as you like; the other two give you limited access on a trial basis.
I've used Wiki as a source for a couple of papers, and no one has questioned its validity - in fact, my English professor encouraged using it because it ended in ".org".

Duh, the wiki. It has less mistakes per entry than the Encyclopedia Britanica (and millions more entries)
