Is a mortician considered an artist?

Traditionally, I would not think so but I suppose it depends on ones definition of an artist. According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, it seems so provided the mortician is skilled or adept.

Interesting question.

I would have to say, in a matter of speaking, yes. It sometimes takes a lot to get a corpse, for the lack of a better word, to look good as possible.
