Unfortunately, there are very few scientific studies on the effects of hair dye used during pregnancy. In some animal studies doses 100 times the amount of hair dye used in normal application showed no significant change in fetal development.
There are high levels of various chemicals in hair color. Low levels of these can sometimes be absorbed through the skin after being applied, and the dye is known to be secreted in urine. The larger danger in hair coloring lay in the fumes, which can be inhaled in greater amounts than will absorb into the skin. Perhaps the greatest risk of the fumes is that they make you nauseous rather than be dangerous for the baby.
There are certain precautions you should take when coloring your hair while pregnant. As always, you should first consult your physician for any recommendations. Second, make sure that you have your hair colored in a well-ventilated area. This will prevent the fumes from making you nauseous. Always wear protective gloves if you are coloring your own hair, as this will prevent the dye from being absorbed into your body through your hands. Rinsing your scalp with cold water can also slow or reduce absorbtion.

Contact your OB. Every doctor is different in how he does his practice and what he thinks is best for the baby. Some doctors don't care if you do it anytime and others say wait until you have the baby. Because of hormone changes though, the highlights might not turn out like what you want them to. So after you check with your doctor, check with whomever is going to do the highlights. I have come across some people that won't do anything but cut and style a pregnant woman's hair.

I would make sure you are in a well ventilated area. I had my hair done a couple times with my last pregnancy. Just remember when you are pregnant the color might not take to well to your hair. And yes, I would wait until after the first trimester.

13 weeks is the beginning of the 2nd trimester. Just to be on the safe side I would wait a couple more weeks.

Most doctors say to wait until after the 1st trimester. Ask your OB their thoughts on it though.

As a hair Stylisyt. I would wait your body is going through alot right now. You do need to add more chemicals to your hair. I coloring will take better if you wait.

I didnt do anything to my hair while I was pregnant. I did not want to take the chance of chemicals absorbing into my system and harming the baby.

I wouldn't have it done until after the baby is born. I just don't think it is safe, nor does my OBgyn...
