because most parents are fearful of what goes on in the world. they remember the things they did as teenagers without remembering all the emotional aspects of it. but they do understand that teenagers are reactors who usually don't think of the consequences of the things they do before they do them. As a teen you are flighty and emotional and most of your actions reflect your mood not your intelligence. but that's just the chemical makeup of teens, there really isn't much you can do about that until you are closer to 20...actually some people never grasp that, i know some 40 year olds who are flighty. Anyway, your parents just want you safe, so they'd rather let you think they don't trust you then let you get hurt.

not all parents distrust teens. 3 of my kids are teens, and i tend to trust them too much. automatically distrusting anyone, teen or not, creates alot of resentful and hostile feelings....and when a teen is resentful, they will withhold everything from the parents. so i believe the best way to handle it is to give your kids a chance to be trustworthy, even if they make mistakes. after all, we were teens once too.

Two answers. First, they were teens and know a lot about how easy it is to make mistakes. Second, they'll probably trust more quickly if you are trustworthy.
