I accidentally cut my finger while I was trying to take the plastic cover off of my disposable razor... Why do those cuts bleed for such a long time?

When a cut is caused by a very sharp instrument (a razor blade, or an alto sax) the blood vessels are cut cleanly and left open, therefore the blood flows freely. If the cut is from something dull or ragged, the blood vessels tear, causing them to be partially crushed closed, which causes slower bleeding and promotes clotting, thereby causing the bleeding to stop more quickly than from a clean cut.

This is why bow-hunters use razor-tipped arrows, to cut cleanly and provide for maximum blood loss and a quicker kill.

The deeper the cut, the longer it will bleed because your blood platelets must group together at the cut and clot the blood. This takes a while. For some people it takes a long time. For people that do not have platelets in their blood, this is a serious problem! Try using a shaving stick. You can usually find these at drugstores. They stop the bleeding very quickly.

Because the blood vessels are there right beneath your skin, which means even a light cut can run for quite a while.
