It all depends on what a person lies about. Say, you play ill to cancel a date, but the real reason you canceled a date is because you find him to be a jerk. You could be lying because either you don't have it in your heart to tell him you don't agree with how he is, or to get back at him for something. I'm just using this scenario as an example.
One time my former sister-in-law (my bro's ex) saw I made a phone call on my cell. I was talking to my boyfriend, who happened to be her friend. I was tempted to lie about who I was talking to (I didn't, though) because it was none of her business who I called! It was NOT done on her phone. And she has a habit of trying to keep tabs on my relationship with her friend.
One time my mother asked if I felt she drinks too much. She is an alcoholic, but lied and said I didn't think so because I was fearful of the wrath I might get. But then, I should've been tactfully honest because what if something happens to her?
I lie to my parents about an ex treating me good, when in fact, he was abusing me. I lied because I wanted to spare my parents the knowledge their daughter was being in another abusive relationship.
Sometimes I do it to keep from hurting a person's feelings.
It all depends on the scenario.
1. To backstab
2. To not hurt a person's feelings
3. To falsely answer a question that's really no one's business what the answer is, but feel too passive to let them know they feel that a question is too personal.
4. Lie intentionally to intentionally hurt feelings and cause trouble
5. Use a lie to cover their tracks and get themselves out of trouble
6. To protect someone from something, like a trauma situation.
7. To keep from being "the middle person" when it comes to a dispute. Say for instance, your brother cheats on his girl. She asks you if he's cheating, but you lie and say "no" because you don't want to be in the middle.
8. Lie to cover for someone, like the example in #7., for instance.
9. Lie to protect themselves from a judgemental person.
10. Lie to cover for themselves.
11. Use a lie to blackmail someone
12. To get out of having to own up for something they did wrong.
13. They have a STD, but lie about their sexual history because they will do ANYTHING to avoid practicing celebacy/abstinance.
It also depends on the individual as to why they lie. Some people feel good about it, but others don't like lying, and hate doing it.
Bottom line, point blank, in one scenario or another, people would use lies because it the easier way to get out of things, to prevent a confrontation, or to prevent getting caught with something. A person sometimes don't realize that if she/he is not careful about lying and the reasons, it can come back to haunt a person. I've been haunted by lies I told before.
Sorry for this LOOOOONG explanation. I hope I didn't bore you. If so, I'm sorry.

Being honest is admitting ur mistakes and flaws. We lie because we are scared of not being accepted for being less than perfect.
