Near the end of the movie Kevin Costner has been living with the Souix for a while. He goes back to his army post to retrieve his journal because it tells the location of the Souix's summer and winter locations. He gets there and there is an army unit occupying the post. He's captured and held as a traitor who turned native. When he escapes he goes back to the Souix tribe for his Indian wife and they set out on their own to lead the army away. I don't think he ever intends to go back to "civilization". I wouldn't have either in his shoes.

Hmm.. Well I've seen the movie before a long time ago and he and his wife do go to hide but split away from the Souix tribe so that there wouldn't be any problems with the army.

Neither...He joined the army because he wanted to have a post in the fields. He got that job, and while there, all alone, he met the Indians. He saw their culture, and how good the people are, he then reliased that army was killing good and innocent people that were just misunderstood, so he joined them. Ofcrouse falling in love with a woman alos helped. He later seperated from the Indians because he realised the army was going to be after him all the time, so he wanted to protect those people by leaving. Good Movie.

He loves the souix, so he turns himself in, maybe then the army will leave the land and people alone, but doesn't happen.

They leave the rest of the tribe so that they won't be hunted. Plus they can get far away if it's just the two of them. They go into hiding.

it's been a while since i have seen it but i think he goes back to the white people to try and find some way to give the native americans a voice in the government.
