EVER lived? 15% of the earth's animal biomass today are ants. I would not have believed that until I went for hike up the mountains last week. Ants evolved from a type of wasp in the Cretaceous Period 120 million years ago but really didn't reach dominance until Tertiary Period about 60 million years ago.
In the book "Collection of Amazing Animal Facts" by Joan Embery and Ed Lucaire, it is claimed "Scientists estimate that there are one quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) ants living on the earth at any given time."
Harvard biologist EO Wilson is an expert in ants. His estimate is between ten to the sixteenth and ten to the seventeen or: 100,000,000,000,000,000 ants.
Over them last 120 million years, it would be a very large number indeed.

Just count their legs and divide by six.
There are over 10000 known species of ants, by the way.
